Statins are powerful medications that reduce cholesterol and are used for primary and secondary prevention of heart disease
However most of the data is related to effects in men. That hasn't stopped recommendations that
women should be taking these drugs as well - often for the rest of their life. However a recent
meta-analysis showed that women without heart disease receive no benefit from statins.
And they can have some pretty serious side effects. For instance, statins are associated with
myopathy, or a pain in the muscles that can lead to muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) that can
fatal. As many as 8-14% of patients have myalgia with statins, and a study
that biopsied these people showed damage to the muscle, even if the lab marker of CK was not elevated.
This means that women have been given a drug with no benefit and known harm.
So you've come a long way baby! but I'm not sure that it is where you wanted to go.
